Limited by legacy ISM bands? Peraso offers an afforable, high capacity V-band solution

Urban Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) are increasingly constrained by congestion on conventional ISM bands. As neighbouring networks, competing operators, and legacy equipment share the same channels, available capacity becomes limited regardless of how the network is optimised. In these conditions, increasing throughput generally requires moving to a less congested and wider portion of the spectrum, such as the 60 GHz band, commonly referred to as V-Band.

V-band for short-range urban backhaul

For backhaul links over short to medium distances, V-band offers greater available capacity than traditional microwave, without the need for a spectrum licence. This comes with a trade-off in range: V-Band links require clear line of sight and are generally limited to distances under 2 km. In dense urban deployments, this range is typically sufficient, since the objective is to connect a cluster of high-density nodes rather than to cover long distances.

Enter Peraso Dune range

The Peraso Dune range has been developed for this type of deployment and includes three units:

  • Dune PER-DUNE-DN170G-AP: a 120-degree sector access point designed to serve multiple clients from a single mast. Peraso's chipset is used in a significant proportion of 60 GHz Point-to-Multipoint deployments currently in operation.
  • Dune PER-DUNE-DN170L-CPE: a 40-degree multi-function radio (CPE/AP) providing throughput of up to 1 Gbps. Used together with the PER-DUNE-DC170P065 forms a Point-to-Multipoint architecture that can be scaled as the subscriber base grows.
  • Dune PER-DUNE-DC170P065: a high-throughput CPE for single-hop links that require maximum capacity, using eight integrated antennas to reach throughput of up to 2.5 Gbps.

Redundancy

The Dune 60GHz PtMP Access Point, Integrated 120deg Sector and Dune 60GHz PtMP/PTP, Integrated 40deg Antenna include dual redundant Ethernet ports, allowing network operators to integrate their own hardware failover or redundancy approach directly into the link, rather than depending on external switches or gateways should the primary path fail.

Installation compared with traditional microwave

The Peraso Dune range integrates the antenna and radio into a single unit, and by using the software-assisted tools for alignment, makes installation easier.

When V-Band is an appropriate choice

V-Band is suitable when capacity needs to be increased within a dense cluster, and licensed spectrum is not preferred. Where backhaul links are under 2 km with clear line of sight, VBand typically offers an efficient way to increase throughput without the regulatory requirements of licensed spectrum.
