Extend your network using your existing power lines with Mercusys MP500 AV1000 Gigabit Powerline Kit

Mercusys MP500 AV1000 Gigabit Powerline Kit

Running Ethernet cable to every room is not always practical. Thick walls, long distances, or rental restrictions often make cabling expensive or impossible.

The Mercusys MP500 AV1000 Gigabit Powerline Kit offers a simple alternative. It uses your existing electrical wiring to extend a wired network connection to rooms where Wi-Fi is unreliable or where no network point exists. No drilling, no rewiring, just plug, pair, and connect.

Note: Link speed refers to the theoretical maximum between adapters. Actual usable throughput varies depending on wiring quality and electrical noise.

What’s in the box

  • 2 × Mercusys MP500 AV1000 Gigabit Powerline adapters
  • 2 × RJ-45 Ethernet cables
  • Quick installation guide

Key features at a glance

  • AV1000 HomePlug AV2 powerline technology with up to 1000 Mbps link speed
  • Gigabit Ethernet port on each adapter for fast wired connections
  • Transmission range of up to 300 m over the same electrical circuit
  • Plug-and-play setup with no software configuration required
  • Pair/Reset button for secure device pairing

How powerline networking works

The Mercusys MP500 uses the HomePlug AV2 standard to transmit network data through your building’s electrical wiring. Instead of sending data over radio frequencies like Wi-Fi, powerline adapters send digital signals along the live electrical cables.

All paired powerline adapters share the same electrical medium, similar to how multiple devices share Wi-Fi bandwidth. You can pair just two adapters for the best performance, or add more to extend the network further. For best results, keep the total number of paired devices to eight or fewer.

The MP500 is compatible with other HomePlug AV and AV2 devices. This allows you to combine it with wireless powerline adapters to extend both wired and wireless coverage where your main router cannot reach.

Pairing additional powerline adapters

The two adapters in the kit are pre-paired and ready to use out of the box.

To add more adapters:

1. Plug them in and ensure the power LED is solid (initially, keep them in the same room).

2.Press the Pair button on one adapter for one second.

3.Within two minutes, press the Pair button on the second adapter for one second.

4.When the LED turns solid green, pairing is complete.

Once paired, you can move the adapters to their final locations.

Ideal use cases

Rooms without network points or reliable Wi-Fi - Great for rooms far from the router or blocked by thick walls. Useful in rental properties where permanent modifications are not allowed.

Home offices and remote work setups - Wired powerline links provide lower latency and more consistent performance than Wi-Fi, improving video calls, VoIP, and cloud-based workflows.

Gaming PCs and consoles - Lower latency and reduced packet loss help minimise lag, often delivering a better experience than Wi-Fi and approaching that of a direct Ethernet connection.

Smart TVs and streaming devices - Moving high-bandwidth devices off Wi-Fi helps reduce congestion, improving network performance for everyone else on the Wi-Fi network.

Limitations to be aware of

Real-world throughput vs link speed - Although the adapters support up to 1000 Mbps link speed, actual throughput depends on wiring quality, electrical interference, and connected appliances.

Electrical distance, not physical distance - The quoted 300 m range refers to electrical path length through the wiring, not straight-line distance between sockets.

Circuit and plug considerations - Powerline adapters may not work reliably across different electrical circuits or phases. Avoid using multi-plugs or surge protectors, as these can block or degrade the signal. Always connect directly to a wall socket.

A practical way to extend wired connectivity

The Mercusys MP500 AV1000 Gigabit Powerline Kit is a cost-effective and reliable way to extend wired network access without the hassle of running cables. It fits well in homes, small offices, and environments where flexibility matters.
