HPE Instant-On: How to setup WireGuard Client VPN
HPE Instant-On: How to setup WireGuard Client VPN

Since the global pandemic in 2020, we have seen a massive rise in the number of people that work from home.

Work-from-home solutions have become increasingly attractive, giving employees more freedom and autonomy while allowing employers to access a wider talent pool beyond geographic limitations and while simultaneously potentially reduce operating costs.

Historically, remote access was achieved using techniques such as port forwarding, SSH reverse tunnelling, or remote access applications like TeamViewer and AnyDesk. However, these solutions come with notable limitations. Port forwarding poses major security risks, SSH offers better security but lacks scalability, while using remote-access tools means that you are dependent on third-party platforms that are often targeted by cyberattacks. Virtual private networks or VPNs offer several benefits over traditional remote access methods.

VPNs protect all traffic with encryption, remove the need to open inbound ports, and they are scalable by allowing multiple services to be used through a single, encrypted VPN tunnel.

Many people have sought out a VPN solution in the past but were afraid of the challenge that lay ahead of them.

The HPE Instant On SG1004 Security Gateways simplifies setup through its cloud-managed, automated configuration. It works reliably behind Carrier-Grade NAT and dynamic IPs, and it includes integrated security features such as firewalls and IDS/IPS (Intrusion Detection/Protection Systems), offering a far more secure and robust alternative to traditional remote-access methods. We will be discussing how to create your own VPN Tunnel using the HPE InstantOn SG1004 Security Gateway and then accessing that VPN using the Wireguard VPN client.

What you need to implement a VPN over Wireguard with the HPE Instant On SG1004:

  • HPE Instant On SG1004 – Only 1 gateway per site is currently supported
  • The Wireguard Client Software – Available on PC and mobile (Android and iOS)
  • An active internet connection via direct or indirect connection

  • TCP ports 80 and 443 must be open and not blocked by the firewall.
  • The Instant On gateway must act as the primary device for all the Instant On devices.

We will be examining the set up for both via mobile and via your laptop through a web browser.

To set up the VPN server and client, we need to follow these 4 main steps:

  1. Configure the Instant On Gateway
  2. Create VPN Tunnel
  3. Create VPN Client Configuration
  4. Connect using Wireguard Client
