What is EasyMesh and how will this impact users?

The concept of Mesh Wi-Fi is not new as many manufacturers offer Mesh Wi-Fi solutions that allow you to extend the reach of your Wi-Fi network to eliminate dead spots.

This is attained by one of the Wi-Fi Mesh nodes having a hard-wired connection to your Internet connection, this can either be done by connecting to an existing router or by replacing the existing router with the node and configuring the PPPoE on the mesh node.  The other mesh nodes then connect wirelessly, typically through the 2.4GHz radio to the main connected unit to extend your Wi-Fi.  Mesh also allows you to have a single SSID being broadcasted by all units and a seamless handover from one node to another as you move within your network.

The downside to this is that if you opt for one specific Mesh brand or manufacturer, you will be limited to that brand as there isn’t any interoperability between brands until now that is.

EasyMesh is a standard from the Wi-Fi Alliance that allows for the interoperability of Mesh units, regardless of brand.

“Wi-Fi EasyMesh removes the need to stay within a single vendor ecosystem to provide the benefits of Multiple AP (also called ‘Mesh’) networks.  Using standardized technology gives service providers and consumers more choice and flexibility.”  From Wi-Fi Alliance

The drawbacks of EasyMesh, like any emerging tech standard, there are some limitations to consider.  For example, a standardised protocol may lead to the loss of unique features offered by various manufacturers. However, the Wi-Fi Alliance is improving the standard, and EasyMesh R2 brings enhancements to Mesh Networking such as standardized Wi-Fi diagnostics, improved channel management, and improved client or band steering.

How will EasyMesh impact the user?  The simple answer, it will offer the end user a greater choice between vendors.

How will I know if my device supports EasyMesh?  Check on the packaging or datasheet of your unit for the EasyMesh Symbol.
