Optimise and Automate your Server Room Air-Conditioning, with Aqara’s Hub and Temperature Sensor

We have been experiencing issues with our Server Room air-conditioning unit due to the increase in load-shedding frequency. The problem is that during load shedding, our backup generator does take a couple of seconds to start up, and we’ve had numerous occasions where the aircon unit does not power up with the backup generator, or when the grid returns.

Our initial idea was to simply implement a temperature sensor that can send a notification to our IT team when the temp exceeds 24 degrees to go and switch on the aircon manually. However, what if this happens at night when we are not at the office?

The solution was relatively simple and very cost-effective. We used the Aqara Hub 2 with a Temperature sensor. The reason why we opted for the Hub 2 is that this allows for adding additional accessories such as the aircon (which in our case supports Wi-Fi connectivity).

To set up the Hub 2, simply power up the unit, connect it to the same network as the smartphone is connected to, and onboard the device using the QR code on the back. The Aqara App’s prompts are straightforward to use. The Temperature sensor was also added within seconds and placed strategically in the server room.

Adding the aircon unit was also simple, simply click on the Hub, add accessories, select the Hub m2, click on add remote control, select air conditioner, and select the brand. The app will prompt you to switch the unit on and off and ask if the unit is responding. Once done, you will have successfully added the aircon unit to the hub.

We opted to set up two simple automation rules to 1) ensure that the aircon powers up during load-shedding and 2) optimise the server room temperature at around 24 to 26 degrees.  This will ensure that the aircon does not run continuously and we reduce our electricity consumption.

The rules were set as follows on automation:

  1. If the temperature drops to 21 degrees, then switch off the aircon.
  2. If the temperature reaches up to 21 degrees, then switch on the aircon.

Most of you should know what the replacement costs would be for sensitive networking equipment such as switches, routers, and servers. With the Aqara solution implemented for under R2,000.00 and about 1 hour of our time, we have implemented a solution to protect our equipment and provide peace of mind.
