Selecting the right BDCOM ONU
Selecting the right BDCOM ONU

Selecting the optimal hardware for your customer-facing fibre networks can be challenging, given the variety of technologies, vendors, and products available. BDCOM provides cutting-edge last mile fibre access solutions with a broad range of xPON Optical Network Terminals (ONTs), designed to meet diverse market needs and user demands. In this article, we'll explore the different ONT options from BDCOM and guide you on selecting the right one for your network and users.

Single-Family Unit (SFU)

SFUs are basic Optical Network Terminals designed for individual households. They convert fibre optic signals into Ethernet but require additional devices, such as routers, to provide Wi-Fi and other network functions. SFUs offer a modular setup, allowing users to customise their network according to their needs.

Home Gateway Unit (HGU)

HGUs provide an all-in-one solution by integrating an ONT, router, and Wi-Fi access point into a single device. With built-in features like Wi-Fi, firewall, and network management, HGUs offer a seamless and easy-to-manage home network. HGUs simplify setup by eliminating the need for multiple devices, making them easier to manage for both service providers and users.

SFU vs HGU

SFUs offer flexibility by allowing users to choose separate home gateway vendors, whereas HGUs deliver a hassle-free solution ideal for service providers seeking a powerful broadband fibre product while minimising complexity and reducing deployment costs.

BDCOM ONU Wi-Fi Performance Testing

Testing was conducted using iperf3.17_64 with a default TCP window size of 128 KB. The client device was a laptop with an Intel AX211 Wi-Fi 6E network adapter running Windows 11. The laptop was positioned approximately 15 metres from the ONUs in an office with high levels of 2.4/5GHz interference from neighbouring access points and other devices in the lab.

Choosing the right ONU depends on the speeds or plans you intend to offer and your subscribers' expectations. Balancing the ever-increasing demand for capacity with deployment costs is crucial to remaining competitive as a service provider.
